Measles is a highly contagious viral disease affecting children. The incubation period is 10 to 12 days after contact with an infected child. The main symptoms include temperature, catarrh, poor appetite, tiredness, conjunctivitis and sensitivity to light. Around the 3rd day, tiny white spots appear in the mouth and throat and a rash over the face and body follows. The child should be isolated to prevent the spread of infection by physical contact and sneezing.
Mumps is a disease caused by a virus that usually spreads through saliva and can infect many parts of the body, especially the parotid and salivary glands. The disease mainly affects children but can occur at any age. Symptoms include a fever and swelling of the glands, first in front and behind the ears and spreading to glands beneath the jaw. Testicles/ovaries can also become swollen and complications such as meningitis can occur - these are much more frequent in adults than children. The patient is infectious 2 to 3 days before the appearance of swollen glands.
Rubella is a viral disease, generally spread by secretions from the nose or throat. The incubation period is 2 to 3 weeks. Symptoms include fever, swollen glands and a rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body. Infection in the early months of pregnancy can cause congenital defects and it is important that all women of child bearing age are protected against rubella. Vaccination of both boys and girls provides an effective prevention.
